Done, done done!!!!!

I'm done, done, done with the assignments, but I will still be working at some of these tools and elements for a long time......I need learn how to down an e-book, audiobooks, and podcasts easier and quicker....I think it is a matter of practice and advice from those more experienced with it....Luckily, Connie at the local library can show me how.....!!!! It will take a while for me to put some of these tools to full use at school....and I will have to request that numerous sites be unblocked....but I will get there!!!! Best of luck to all the other class members!

Week 9 Thing 23 Creative Commons

The Creative Commons YouTube video is well done......It would be great showing it in a higher level course where students are creating art or research projects/papers....preparing them to be altruistic with their creativity and watching how it blooms and flourishes....

At the top of each thing explanation is the title School Library Learning 2.0 then -An Online Learning Program for CSLA Members and Friends. also- "Learning 2.0 is a discovery learning program created by Helene Blowers. The PA team has added some phrases and their own wiki and blog, etc to make it relate to PA members...

Week 9 Thing 23 Online Survey and Summary Questions

I did the PA online survey, but when I clicked on done, a screen said that the blog was not found, so I don't know if the survey recorded.... a sign of the way the day is going so far........
My favorite discoveries were: creating a blog, creating an avatoar, Flickr, Google docs, and Zoho (?) Writer.......
I have been more confident about tech items and have shared a few ideas with the Gifted Class. I hope that classes like this will continue to be offered so that I can indeed become a lifelong learner....at my own pace and place.....
I was surprised that I could actually use some of these tools which until now I had never heard of....
I could have used a person to contact when I got stuck.....
Yes, I would participate gladly in another program.
One word- exciting! One sentence- I couldn't have imagined all that was out there to use in the classroom!
I will be re-purposing my blog next summer, and I have started a wiki on the library webpage...I am just wondering where to turn if I get stuck.....

Cute "A Fair(y) Use Tale" with Disney words and excerpts melded into new sentences on You Tube....To do this word by word must involve huge amounts of time....speaking of time, a lifetime and 70 years is insane.....
Fair use is a legal defensible position....The clip quickly covers the 4 pieces- nature, amount, effect, and portion..(PANE?)
I checked out the Creative Commons and learned that you can set the amount of use you wish your item to have.......
I am trying to check out Lawrence Lessig's blog, but it's not coming up....I wa trying to install audacity and the Apple video editor also...that's not going all that well either....

Week 9 Thing 22 ebooks

I am an audiobook addict. I HAVE to have an audio book playing in the car when I drive.....I have used the free audiobooks from our local libraries. Let's see how this goes.......
I'm a tad confused about the relationship between the World eBook Library and the School Library.com...are they one and the same?????
Wow! There's a lot out there. I checked out LibriVox and am now working on the British Libary Online Gallery, while itunes and quicktime download. Shockwave, needed to open the British Virtual books, is having a hizzy fit....perhaps because I have popups blocked...allowed popups and now it is installing...

I'm jetting from Primetime Podcast Receiver to EPN's (The Educational Podcast Network) suggested ipodder. There are better instructions and descriptions on this site. OK- I lose...the ipodder.org address from this site took me back to podcastalley.com.....whic took me back to Primetime Podcast Receiver...a constant circle......
The Yahoo site link is not working....only the Educational Podcast Directory and Pod alley.com ones are still working......
I tried to subscribe to the RSS feed for NPR story of the day, but since the ipodder took me to podcastalley and that took me to mevio entertainment, stuff kept playing...I see the NPR story o d the day in my collection, but yikers....? What to do???

Thing 21 revisited- podcasts

I am still having trouble with this one. I downloaded a podcast aggregator- only 2 had a rating of 3 stars, so I picked the PrimeTime one and downloaded it. It took me to PodCast Alley, but under directory, the one audiobook I choose did not load...back to square one.....

Thing 17 revisited- posting on the PAcurriculum wiki

I emailed Crystal and received the invite key....which worked to allow me to edit the wiki as per Thing 17. I worked on the Wikis page. After entering my 2 suggestions, I could not resist change the text size to all one size. Some was in large, some small, some x-small. I find that distracting. I changed it to all small so that it looks cohesive....and intentional... Hope that is ok. This is a great tool. Not as forbidding as I had imagined it..
However, that said, the line between wikis and Google docs is beginning to blur in my mind as both are tools for collaboration...

The YouTube for the monk learning to use the book was humorous...I have indeed heard myself say the same things about the computer when I was beginning...

I watched Super Librarian- a public library PR piece- from the New Jersey Libraries?- cute and attention getting....It was listed as related video on the sidebar when iwatched the suggested videos. The Adventures of Super Librarian was also a promo from a public library. Something like these could be used on the school television morning announcement show...The Library Ninja was able to silence the student swearing on a cell phone in the episode I watched. Then the ninja demonstrated how sometimes books are better than computers- for a crossword puzzle...

Library Thing is also amazing. At first I moved the radio button off Amazon.com to "690 other sources", to English, to US....but it didn't seem to make sense to pick a university when the top choice for records was amazon.com still, so I went back to that. I put in 5 titles from David Balducci that we have in our staff library. I see the bookcovers are pictured and the list forms quickly...
The Balducci books were pretty popular-1.031, 920, 921, 759, and 905 other members had them.....
So I clicked on a discussion under "talk" about Cliched Books by Teenage Book Nudgers....it was a bit immature, I thought, with back and forth about swearing and vampires and what to do with a book they did not like......doesn't really interest me to read these messages...Now I've found comments about the books in my list under "your books"...it tells which book and the username of the person who posted the message. This interests me...in fact, I read all the way through the zillion posts to one thread...."crime, thriller and mystery books- what are you reading?"
In the book talk section under "Topic- Pick a Game" they challenge each other to pick a book from a previous poster's library...etc.
This site is definitely a way to keep track of what you read and how you rate it. I could do this for audio books as I can't remember which ones I have checkked out of the library already.....

Zoho Writer was easy and quasi miraculous in how it can find the blog and post to it...
Google Sites tutorial was interesting. Sites.google.com. I think the features were more intuitive in Zoho Writer, but I always need a lot of visual help.....Google Docs has a tool bar, but Zoho has a more extensive one...I like that.

I am trying out the various functions in Zoho Writer....let's insert a picture, a table,  and some color... ok- the picture came in...now the table. yup...that's here...and easy to adjst the size through the squares on the ends...the info talked about cute smileys- we need some of those. Very easy.  ok- it puts this icon here which can be expanded.....and the font color is easy.... bold, italics, underline are here... I had never used a strikethrough icon but that was easy...

It Worked! Thing 18 Zoho Writer

I have to say- that was pretty amazing how I saved a document in Zoho and it found my blog and published it there....

This is the start of the blog entry for today for Thing 18. I am creating it in Zoho Writer I will try Google Docs next. I see that we can use a log-in through Google for Zoho Witer and if you switch between the 2, you are still logged into Google. I am going to try to take this over to the blog.

Week 7 Thing 17 PA Wiki

Yay! PA has the same format as I just enjoyed in the CA sandbox. I enjoyed the Albany County Public Library Staff wiki as an example of a way our library can update its current policies over time and with the input of several staff members...
The Library Bloggers wiki is a great source for different types of library blogs - academic, public, school, special, etc.
I'm still a little fuzzy on the delineation of a wiki from a blog....a blog has one writer while many can contribute to a wiki...? I have been looking at the sample school wiki from Westwood, but I understand the English and AP History ones better.
As always, Joyce Valenza has a great list of topics on her wiki...teacherlibrarianwiki- it is similar to a pathfinder....
The list of examples of wiki uses was very helpful...I can see a wiki as a place to discuss Battle of the Books, Library Club issues, Info Tech discoveries, ethics, etc.

I could live without the bee background in Wikis: A Beginner's Look, but she makes her point- if you are into "control", a wiki is not for you.
The last link suggests wikis as easily-updated vehicles for subject guides, a function to annotate your OPAC, a way for librarians to discuss subjects of interest, and a way to get community input. Wikis are what we needed several years ago for our online partner projects, as opposed to emailing back and forth at infinium....and losing track of which version was the last one....

Week 6 Thing 15 Perspectives on Web 2.0

Rick Anderson's 3 icebergs are: the "just in case collection" (why?), the belief that we can train all the users, (not going to happen...) , and the "come to us" model (we are no longer an info monopoly). Libraries have to meet patron needs and go the extra mile to provide services....
Michael Stephens suggests that librarians use the new 2.0 tools, make the library user-centric, don't just get technology for its own sake, make quick decisions after following trends carefully, and be open to multi-media. I have not heard of the OCLC Pattern Recognition, User Perception, and Cluetrain Manifesto that he mentions...
Chip Nilges of OCLC noted that the entire web should be explored, that users should contribute to the expertise collection, that programs should be able to be used easily and "remixed", and that good data is key to a better database.
John Riemer suggests that libraries contribute to metadata, rethink relevance ranking, add popular features that other sites have, and enlarge options available to patrons.
Dr. Wendy Schultz moves from Library 1.0- a collection of books, a commodity; to Libray 2.0- a product that still needs tour guides; to Library 3.0- service and librarians as virtual coaches; to Library 4.0 where libraries are like information spas...atmospheres...
Even though I distrust Wikipedia, that is a pretty impressive list of journal articles re Library 2.0....

Ok- so what is Boing Boing that it has 4,015 fans and is the top blog by number of fans... I have to check this out...it is a "weblog of cultural curiosities and interesting technologies"- what is that??? It appears to be- "How to make a Victorian Flea Chariot"- (high on my to-do list!), chocolate beer, and Mandelbrot the fractal teddy-bear...ok......
There are 2 results for "School Library Learning 2.0" when the quotation marks are left in to keep it together.. "School Library Learning 2.0" and "100 Free Library 2.0 Webinars and Tutorials." That sounds much better than Victorian Flea Chariots. Come to think of it, there is going to be a dance at the school with a Victorian theme. Maybe I should check out those chariots...
Actually, I'd like to keep a real low profile and stay out of any searches.....I prefer it that way.....at school when I poll the students, they indicate they rarely mark anything private....hellllllloooo........can you say the word "security"?
I'm an organizational type of person and I can appreciate tags.....as the number of digital photos and bookmarks, etc, continue to grow, organization (tagging) is going to be the key to finding them quickly....if I remember which tag I put them in.....like putting something in a folder that seems logical one day only to search for it unsuccessfully a week later.....Those Sears headings are looking better and better....Leave it to me to create the tags and things may fall apart rapidly....

There are 55 posts tagged Library and Research. There are a number of videos, mostly posted by universities for tutorials or research guides. This site is overwhelming....

The former librarian at our school used something similar- "Ikeepbookmarks.com." This has the feature of letting others do some of your research.....It's a little creepy....
It is great that the site is accessible from any computer....I will definitely use this in my 7th and 9th grade classes...
I watched 4 of the tutorials and am getting a better feel for what del.icio.us can do....even if I am still creeped out about using other people's lists....I was rather hoping that the SJLibraryLearning2 account matched the many of the 23 items I have been working on today....looks like I will need to construct that list and add some from other lists as I get comfortable with it...The link to "Top 13 Web 2.0 Tools for Librarians at Infodoodads" has half of them....but not all....
The 2 big advantages to previous bookmarking sites seem to be the ability to access it from any computer (like ikeepbookmarks.com) plus the ability to search other people's bookmarks similar to the tags you are interested in.....I can use it in place of a separate link page on the library website for topics that need to be updated often...Libraries can create all kinds of lists for re-occuring patron requests, or even for specific requests to be visited from home after the intial library visit.....
Wow! Some of the public libraries in the examples are really on top of this! As they note, it's better than watching patrons google away to nonsense sites...

I'm confused in Rollyo as to what is being added to what....I thought I was adding the searchroll to my blog but it seems that I was adding my blog to the searchroll.

Week 5 Thing 12 Rollyo

In Rollyo, http://rollyo.com//dashboard.html, I needed to have the list of addresses to add before I created the searchroll...going backwards resulted in duplicates...but it is a great concept. I will probably do one for the fake websites lesson and other lists of websites that I use in lessons.
I created an account, created a search roll for Library Stuff - duplicated by accident....ok- now tripled as I don't see a way to delete the various names, which are actually all the same with different names....

Students, if not blocked from this tool, could really put it to use as they could create it for a project at school then access it at home without finding all the sites again.....We have trouble taking information between school and home as CDs and disks are not allowed and flashdrives don't work on many of the computers for some reason....(newer version, etc?)

I needed to click on the box "post to sidebar" under the preview of the image in Image Chef to move it off the post and on to the sidebar where the image is animated. In a post it remains still.....learn by experimenting.....

saw one blog mention Twitter, so I had to go there. I see that it placed ahead of Facebook, followed by Bebo (which I've never heard of) , MySpace, and Friendster...so what does Twitter have that the others don't? Week 5 Thing 10 Online Image Generator

I found a picture that I liked and used "captioner" in FD Toys to make a balloon saying, then saved it as a jpeg. It was easy and fun. I think the Library Club students would love to do this to their trip photos. The image of the person saying it is intentionally obscure....I can see students using this as they study Native American folklore, etc.- putting words in characters mouths. I think the generator blog FD Flickr Toys is my new best friend! now- can we access it at school or is it blocked???? If so, can we get all the needed pieces and software opened? On Comic Strip Generator, I see a lot of the Simpson comic strip panels...is this a copyright issue? Can I just put words on a famous person's picture or on a copyrighted comic strip????? I found FD Toys easier than Comic Strip Generator to move dialog, etc around in....

I had to register, but when i saved the heart and imported it, it no longer blinked....bummer... oops- I went back to the page on Image Chef and used the Auto Posting Tool, put in my Google username and password, and my blog title, and yippee! Now I have started adding award-winning blogs to my reader, recognizing the symbol on the page that was demonstrated on the blipTV clip...I added Hey Jude, the award winner for best library/librarian award, and Ed Tech Journeys, the best newcomer.....hopefully the 7 feeds so far will not be more than I can read in a sitting.....

I came across the award-winning Flat Classroom project. I just read the book last fall and was totally impressed. I will look into this project as a potential template for a sociology class....It was GREAT to come across this.....

In trying to subscribe to the superglu school library link, I get the message "IE does not support feeds with DTDs." What are DTDs?

I just added Muller in the Middle, for book reviews for middle school. It was listed on a page under blogs with no RSS feed, but the subscription went through.....

Syndic8.com - a little complicated to understand- homepage has too many options. There was a tenn reads site, but no icon to subscribe...must i subscribe to the service first? (ie- there is a log-in area for Syndic8.com)

Topix.net - presents all the news and trends in an easy to read and choose homepage. For some reason, Tunkhannock seems to be the city it picked as central for the news. I changed it to my home town. I read more than I needed to know in the comments posted to one local story.....This seems more like a homepage or link to me than a searchtool for feeds...

In the Google Blog Search there were 173 results for School Library Learning 2.0....simialr to the listing on the SLL homepage...

The Technorati Blog Finder tutorial was in German, but I switched it to English......It involves a membership and log-in....Hans Mestrum appears to be the webmaster....

The 2 conversations with CSLA 2.0 on Blog Pulse were both in Spanish..... Guess it does show the international flavor of today's technology......

I definitely made out best in the award-winners link for finding blogs I was interested in.....Syndic8.com was overwhelming. ....and the others- well, I can't even keep up with my email let alone read a zillion posts in a night on a reader......

Week 4 Thing 8 RSS and Google Reader

The video at BlipTV was great! Very easy to understand....and one comment points out that something different form Powerpoint is a plus these days.....Another comment referred to "powerpointlessness" as people tire of the ppt format. Even I understand what RSS is now....and can't wait to sign up!

arrgghh...I signed up to Google Reader, but can't actually get some of the sites I often visit...I understand why my granddaughter's site can't be subscribed to- password protected- but why can't I add the school district site? I was browsing and signed up for Google News- until I saw that the 10 feeds have 3,422.1 posts per week.....like I need that...I "unsubscribed" or any TRYING to unsubscribe...it doesn't seem to be completing the task.... yay! it unsubscribed...so I subscribed to the "library" bundle under "browse".....it has several blogs and LISNews.org, Tame the Web, Librarians' Internet Index: New This Week, and Information Wants to be Free. We'll see......

RSS has many potential uses at school, particularly for new booktalks, new releases, etc. to place on the library webpage. The advantages in my personal life are limited by the fact that you can't subscribe to some of the sites that you read the most, but on a professional level, the advantages are limitless....

I managed to get the blogs off my Google Reader subscriptions so that the size of news is manageable..... There are now 6 feeds on it and I will search for some good ones in the next Thing.

Week 3 Thing 7 Blog Post

I need to look into Skype since my children travel a lot....Does anyone have information and experience with it?

I picked several blogs from the ones listed on the Web 2.0 page and posted comments. The variety is astonishing. Wow! I like Bookslinger's Shelfari.....!

An FYI- I don't see this blog on the list of blogs.....

I had not experienced Flickr before....it is all new to me....and i'm having a great time doing the various challenges. My husband asked if any of this could be used in his business.....something to think about.....

Week 3 Thing 6 cont.

The color wheel that comes up on the magazine cover link is very cool...but I am having trouble getting the same color for each line....
I like the 17 lines available...this would be great for a research option outside of powerpoint! I loved the magazine cover I made and it was easy! The trading card was easy to make also....

I will definitely use the magazine cover creator and trading card creator in projects......I can see the senior class using trading cards for a senior mural collage...and the history teacher doing the magazine cover for the PA Indian unit.

Other programs listed on Flickr toys such as Badge maker, movie poster, map maker, etc might also be great project starters...

Week 3 Thing 6 Mashups

Interesting- the header at the trading card link openly states that embarrassment possibilities are unlimited!

Unfortunately, there are no books, computers, or libraries in the icon selection area. I chose a heart. I have edited the trading card several times, but I can't get rid of the description section and have the picture cover the whole card...and the text does not seem centered.

I think that the students would love this....IF the site is not blocked at the school...I will have to find a student to try it, since their log-ins have fewer permissions than our faculty log-ins.

The article from Wikipedia is indeed informative, (though technical at the end) even if I spend considerable time trying to get students not to rely on Wikipedia, to use it only as a starting point for research....

I see that as of 2007, Mappr is not taking Flickr images any more. You have to go back to Flickr. Color Pickr is fun- lots of leaves and grass in the green section! The red section doesn't seem to produce many flowers....colored filters must be the norm...

In Montagr, the "face" mosaic that loads on the home page (by default?) takes a while to load.....I tried the tag "library", and an interesting mosaic resulted, but the individual photos in the masaic are too small to see....

I like the librariantradingcard link in Flickr....I needed to see how others used the description part to their advantage.....most are not what I would ever print for use...but they are interesting. I like the Library of Congress atrium on the one card....I would not put a photo of myself....but putting the library picture on was nice....

I am trying the magazine cover, but I am not sure if it is free.....

Week 3 Thing 5 still

It took me a while to figure out how to add an image...the little icon with the seascape or mountains or whatever it is......this is when good vision would be a perk...instead of cataracts.....

A search of all Flickr members for school library resulted in 91 people, including the ALA, but also some questionable ones.....

Google's Picasa Web Albums looks nice, but everyone I know sends photos on Walgreen or Flickr.....

I'm happy to see editing options on all of these sites. My photoshop editing skills are elementary. SmugMug advertises "Your photos look better here" and they are impressive, but the standard subscription is $39.95 per year and pro quality is $149.95 per year. This is for the big guys......

It's hard for me to mark something "public", but I took the challenge and posted a few pictures of our library, marking them "school library learning2.0" and "public." I note that this automatically added the tag "school" to the one I put in for "library."

I tried to import my avatar for my "buddy" icon, but I don't think it happened. I have asked a friend to check her screen when she goes to Flickr next time. I'm not sure if I'm seeing her icon or mine.....I see that I already have a contact....and can see all the photos of her contacts- that is scary to me......I'm much into privacy....will work on this...

Week 3 Thing 5: Flickr still....

It appears that these companies are partners: MOO can do mini-cards, business cards, stickers and more, according to the small ad on the bottom of the Flickr page. QOOP can do calendars, posters & books. Tiny Prints can do holiday cards, Blurb books, and Imagekind specializes in framing Flickr photos.Hmmmm...

I decided to take the challenge and create a Flickr account, which was easy since I already had a yahoo account from many years ago......I tried to export my avatar to be the buddy icon, but I don't think that happened....I see all kinds of pictures, and apparently I already have buddies....yikers....This is scary....I can see all the photos from her contacts in addition to her photos.

I have posted some pictures from the library, made them a set, and given them tags, including School Library Learning2.0. Giving them that tag apparently added the tag "school" in addition to the one I put in for "library." I had to look back at the Flickr organization chart to see what the difference was between a set and a collection. I marked the photos public, as instructed, even though this is against my nature.....

Thing 5: Flickr

This is where I got hung up before the holidays. I have privacy issues and posting and sharing photos in Flickr seems a little scary.
At school, we create Read posters using Wal-Mart poster processing. Each person who is photographed- faculty, student, community member- must sign a poster permission slip. I will not take their picture without the permission slip, or in the case of a minor, a permission slip with the parent's consent.

Going through the Flickr tutorial, I see that they assume I know what MOO cards and QOOP Photo books are. Are these brand names (??????) since Imagekind Prints are also listed, as are Capital One Image Cards and Blurb Photo Books.
